This interdisciplinary trimester elective will provide an introduction to the field of neuroscience and how our body translates electrochemical impulses into thoughts, emotions, behaviors, self-awareness, and consciousness. Specific topics may include: the anatomy of nervous systems, neurotransmitters and their receptors, feedback mechanisms, brain injuries, disorders of the nervous system including depression and Alzheimer’s disease, sleep and dreams, theories of the self and of conscious will, and how drugs affect the mind and body. A multicultural survey of the history and philosophy of the mind and discussions of scientific theories will be integrated into the overall course structure. The class will be based on lectures, readings, class discussions, projects, and personal self-inquiry.
